The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Africa CDC, announced on Tuesday that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, and Uganda has reached 604.
The agency also said the death toll from the outbreak had reached 102 as of Monday, indicating that Ebola continues to cause deaths despite measures taken.
In the past 24 hours, the DRC has reported 45 new confirmed cases of Ebola. In Uganda, no new cases have been reported during the same period. This indicates that the spread of the epidemic is different between the two countries.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday that the Ebola outbreak in Uganda is under control. He said that the measures taken continue to be effective in reducing new infections.
However, in the DRC, Africa CDC noted that efforts to combat the spread of Ebola continue to face various challenges. These include resource constraints, limited capacity of health institutions, and operational challenges in areas affected by the outbreak.
In recent days, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that if strong and rapid measures are not taken to reduce the spread of the Ebola virus, the number of cases in the DRC could reach 20,000. To date, the DRC has about 500 confirmed cases of Ebola. Ituri province has been hit hard, accounting for more than 90% of the country's total cases.
Health officials continue to urge the public to follow precautionary measures. They urge people to seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms of Ebola. They also urge health authorities to track down those who have come into contact with patients to prevent the spread of the disease.
