Banyamurenge people living in the United States and Kenya protest demanding that their relatives be protected.
Protests in the United States
Banyamulenge people living in the United States have peacefully protested, calling on the international community to help their kinsmen who are under constant attack in South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The protest took place in Washington D.C.
Organizers and participants
The MPA (Mahoro Peace Association) organized the protest, which was attended by over 4,000 Banyamulenge from various parts of the United States, who came to denounce the violence against their people in the DRC.
What they accuse the DRC and Burundian armies of
The MPA has accused the DRC and Burundian armed forces of being involved in the ongoing killings of the Banyamulenge in Minembwe commune and other parts of the highlands of South Kivu. The organization says that through collaboration with armed groups, indiscriminate attacks, and the continued closure of roads to prevent civilians from accessing essential services, this is contributing to what many describe as a slow genocide being committed against the Banyamulenge.
Message to the international community
The Banyamulenge have informed the international community that they cannot talk about peace in the Great Lakes region while the Banyamulenge are being starved, attacked, and killed because of their ethnicity. They demanded that the closure of roads connecting the Banyamulenge to markets and health facilities be stopped, that civilians be protected, and that an independent investigation be conducted into the crimes committed against them.
Protests also took place in Kenya.
The Banyamulenge people living in Kenya also protested on April 20, demanding justice for their relatives living in Minembwe. They also accused the DRC and Burundian government forces of being involved in the killings.
A strong request has been made.
The message they took to the streets of Nairobi included a call for the resignation of DRC President Félix Tshisekedi, who they say has not stopped the killings, and which they say are part of a genocide plan.
