Three Japanese soldiers died early Tuesday morning during a flu-fighting drill at a military base in Oita Prefecture, in the south of the country, the country's prime minister said.

In a message posted on social media, Takaichi Sanae said that during the Type 10 rifle training exercise, “a bomb is said to have exploded inside the gun” before it was discharged. The explosion occurred inside the rifle.

The number of dead and injured

Prime Minister Sanae confirmed that "of the four people on board, three died and one was injured." He added that an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway to determine the truth.

Japanese newspaper reports

Japanese media reported that the dead were three men aged between 20 and 40, and the injured were a woman in her 20s.

Accidents that have occurred at the facility before

This is not the first time such an accident has occurred at the facility. In August 2025, two ground forces soldiers were killed by lightning during training at the facility, according to Japanese media reports.
