More than 300 migrants heading to Britain last summer were kidnapped in Libya. They are from Iraqi Kurdistan. They were kidnapped by a militant group that demanded $5,000 from each family and threatened to remove their kidneys if they did not hand them over quickly.
We spoke to some of the hostages who were later released. They also showed us photos showing signs of forced labor. The detainees showed signs of torture, and said they were held in very poor conditions, with up to 180 people crammed into one room.
One hostage is reported to have died, and it is not yet known how many are still being held. The migrants were aiming to reach the Mediterranean coast, where they would board a boat bound for the UK.
A dispute over payment arose between the fighters and an Iraqi Kurdish businessman named Noah Aaron, who had organized the migration. Aaron has now been sentenced to 10 years in prison in France for money laundering and human trafficking.
Details of the kidnapping emerged in a recent BBC investigation into another businessman, Kardo Jaf. That investigation led to Jaf's arrest last month. A report by the British think tank Chatham House says the two businessmen have worked together in the past.
Both are from the town of Ranya in Iraqi Kurdistan. The area is said to have a thriving human trafficking network. Traffickers use these networks to recruit migrants, kidnap them, and extort large sums of money from their families.
In February, a BBC investigative team was investigating Jaf in Ranya when a local man approached them and said his son was among the young men taken hostage. This highlights how human trafficking continues to operate on a small scale, affecting many families.
