Alireza Arafi has been named as the interim successor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike. The successor to Ali Khamenei was announced on Sunday, March 1, 2026, a day after the supreme leader was assassinated.

Arafi was previously a member of the Council of Experts that elects the Supreme Leader. It is expected that Iran will be led by a Council consisting of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Alireza Arafi, and Supreme Court Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei until the Council of Experts approves a new Supreme Leader in Iran.

Ali Khamenei's death was announced in the early hours of Sunday. He was killed in a US airstrike on his home on Saturday. He had been Iran's Supreme Leader since 1989.

Arafi has taken on the role as Iran continues to face US and Israeli attacks, as well as considering how to avenge its Supreme Leader.

Alireza Arafi is the head of Islamic religious higher education institutions (seminaries) and a member of the Assembly of Experts.

Placing Arafi in these positions aims to maintain stability and the normal functioning of the country's institutions, pending a formal process to select a new supreme leader.

The Iranian constitution provides that if the position of Supreme Leader is vacant due to death or other reasons that prevent the Supreme Leader from holding office, a three-member Council is established to immediately assume the responsibilities of interim leadership.
