The United States is implementing a plan to change the way it recruits soldiers into its military. By December 2026, young people will no longer register to join the United States military in person, but will instead be done electronically.

Previously, it was required that those between the ages of 18 and 25 register within 30 days, but sometimes they do not comply.

This is done so that when a country needs to recruit soldiers, it can immediately go and see who has registered and is eligible. This is seen as a move that will lead the United States to increase the amount of money spent on the campaign to require those between the ages of 18 and 25 to register.

The new law is currently under review and must be approved before it can be implemented. The Selective Service System (SSS) submitted the draft to the US Regulatory Commission on March 30, 2026.

In the United States, people between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Failure to do so is considered a misdemeanor and can result in up to five years in prison.

Those who do not do so may also miss out on other opportunities such as tuition fees, government jobs, etc. Although these laws exist, in 2024 they were shown to be complied with at a rate of 81%.

The spokesperson for the Office of the President of the United States, Caroline Leavitt, was asked in March 2026 whether these things were being done to identify those who would go to war with Iran, and another denied it, stating that it was a long-term project that was not current.
