Bishop Harerimana convicted of treason – Sentenced to four years suspended
The Gasabo Local Court has convicted Bishop Harerimana Jean Bosco, the leader of Zelaphat Holy Church, of fraud and selling and pledging property belonging to another. It sentenced him to four years in prison, suspended for two years, and a fine of 1 million Rwf.
In addition to the prison sentence and fine, Bishop Harerimana was ordered to pay Monique Nyiratuza Rudacogora 2.5 million Rwf in compensation and another 24 million Rwf for the value of her car, which he sold without permission.
Bishop Harerimana was accused of selling Monique Nyiratuza Rudacogora's car and even giving a mortgage on it without permission. This was considered fraud and dishonesty in business dealings and the management of another's property.
The four-year prison sentence is suspended for two years, meaning he will not be sent to prison immediately if he does not commit another crime within two years. If he does commit another crime, he will have to serve the entire sentence again.
The case has once again put the spotlight on the mismanagement of assets within religious organizations, where some use the church's name for their own personal gain. Many say this is a lesson for religious leaders to abide by business laws and integrity.
The punishment has sparked controversy among residents and members of the Zelaphat Holy Church, with some saying it undermines their trust in the church's leadership. Others believe it is a step to protect residents who are often victims of fraud in the name of religion.
