Gen Sadio Camara killed in Kati: Mali again attacked by rebel groups
Al Jazeera reported on April 26, 2026, that Mali's Defense Minister, Gen Sadio Camara, was killed in an attack by armed groups on his home in the city of Kati. Since Saturday, his home had been repeatedly attacked by al Qaeda and Tuareg fighters. Camara was one of the senior military figures involved in the 2020 and 2021 coups that toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.
Gunfire was heard in the city of Kidal and other parts of northern and central Mali on Sunday. Fighters from the Azawad Liberation Front (ALF), which seeks independence for the Tuareg ethnic group, attacked towns in the north, while the Islamist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) carried out attacks elsewhere in the country.
The attacks also targeted President Assimi Goita's residence, but he was quickly evacuated to a safe location and continues to lead the fight. The Malian army said it was conducting operations to combat the armed groups and restore security in the affected areas.
Since a military junta took power in Mali in 2020, the country has broken with France and the ECOWAS bloc and has continued its military cooperation with Russia through the Wagner Group. This has increased tensions with rebel groups operating in the Sahel, particularly the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM.
The ALF, which is allied with other Tuareg groups seeking independence for the northern region of Azawad, has been fighting for years, with a 2015 peace deal in place, but it collapsed in 2023 after the Malian military government began seizing towns and villages inhabited by Tuaregs.
Analysts say the death of Gen Camara could destabilize the Malian military, as he was one of the key leaders of the military regime. They also point out that there could be further attacks aimed at controlling different parts of the country, which would increase the displacement of the population and delay projects to restore democracy in Mali.
