Attack on Bagmoussa: 28 soldiers killed in Burkina Faso
An armed group opposing the government of Burkina Faso attacked the Bagmoussa military base in Koulpelogo Province on the morning of April 22, 2026. More than 28 people were killed in the attack, according to Radio France Internationale (RFI).
RFI said that among the dead were government soldiers and members of armed groups affiliated with them, and that many others were missing. A military base was looted and some of its equipment was destroyed, while residents' homes were destroyed by the attackers.
Since Capt Ibrahim Traoré took power in September 2022, terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda-affiliated JNIM and IS Sahel have stepped up attacks on national army positions. This has increased the level of insecurity in Burkina Faso and the Sahel region in general.
Capt Traoré indicated that in order to defeat these extremist groups, he will increase the number of soldiers, especially in the Inkeragutabara branch. This branch will provide assistance when the country is attacked.
On April 24, 2026, the Government of Burkina Faso approved a draft law governing the functioning of the Civil Defense. The draft law foresees that by 2026, the country will train 100,000 soldiers who will be used in times of critical security.
The decision reflects the government's desire to remain on the defensive as attacks continue to escalate. However, analysts say that defeating these groups will require more than just increasing the number of troops, including improving governance and engagement with the population.
