In Nyagatare, 1,404 adolescents under the age of 18 suffered from unplanned pregnancies.
Today, a serious youth health problem has emerged in Nyagatare District: a large number of teenagers under 18 years of age are getting pregnant, sexually transmitted diseases and new infections with the HIV virus. Hospital authorities, youth and the Ministry of Youth have issued a message urging people to take precautions and take measures. On Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the World Population Day celebrated in Nyagatare with the theme: "Youth achieving the Sustainable Development Goals", it was announced that from July 2025 to June 2026, 1404 adolescents under the age of 18 were pregnant.
The Director General of Nyagatare Hospital, Dr. Ndayambaje Eddy, said that in the year 2025/2026, 3928 people were treated for sexually transmitted diseases, including 1071 youth, representing 27.3%. He added that 500 new people were infected with the HIV virus, including 94 youth.
Dr Ndayambaje said that the problems faced by the youth can affect their mental health and overall well-being. He said: βIn Nyagatare, in recent years we have continued to be at the forefront of teenage pregnancy. We urge the youth to avoid it so that their future is not ruined.β
He reminded the youth to avoid alcoholism, drugs and behaviors that can put their lives and future at risk, and to take decisions that protect their health, including preventing sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS.
Irakoze Diane, 23, a graphic designer, said that some young people do not listen to their parents' advice, which leads them to problems including teenage pregnancy. She called for continued efforts to promote art as a career that can provide them with income.
Tuyizere Joshua, a producer of animal feed and fertilizer, said the biggest problem is the lack of capital. He said: βAs many people get capital and implement their projects, they also provide jobs to their peers. Others who behave badly will also be reduced.β
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development, Ishungure Parfait, said that 70% of Rwandans are under 35 years of age, while 27% are between 16 and 30. He noted that the government continues to implement programs that help youth gain skills and opportunities in the job market.
He also reminded youth to avoid sexual intercourse that can put their lives at risk, to get tested, to avoid drugs, and to make decisions that will lead to a better future, so that they can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
