CityLink plane crashes in Juba, killing 14 people
The Civil Aviation Authority of South Sudan announced that a small Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft operated by CityLink Aviation Ltd crashed on April 27, 2025, killing 14 people. Among them were one pilot and 13 passengers, including one Kenyan.
The plane took off from Yei at 3:15 PM bound for Juba, but lost contact with air traffic controllers 30 minutes later. It crashed 20 kilometers southwest of the capital, Juba. Initial investigations indicated that the crash was caused by bad weather, particularly poor visibility for the pilots.
Authorities immediately dispatched a rescue team to the crash site, but were unable to save anyone. The incident further highlighted the dangers of small planes that often operate in rural areas of South Sudan where aviation infrastructure is weak.
South Sudan has long had a problem with aviation safety, largely due to poor roads, difficult weather conditions and outdated equipment. In recent years, there have been several other accidents involving small planes carrying passengers and cargo between cities and other parts of the country.
The Cessna 208 Caravan is a small aircraft used to transport passengers and cargo in areas that are difficult to reach by car, especially in Africa. Although it is a reliable aircraft, it is prone to problems in bad weather due to its small size and lack of sophisticated technological equipment to assist pilots in poor visibility.
The crash has put renewed pressure on South Sudan's authorities to tighten aviation safety controls and improve airspace infrastructure. Analysts say better aircraft tracking equipment, adequate training for pilots, and stricter rules for flying in bad weather are needed to prevent further accidents.
