The war between Ukraine and Russia began in February 2022, and has become more of a machine-based conflict than a human one. Ukrainian military figures show that 1,307,540 Russian soldiers have been killed in the conflict.
Russia lost 11,847 planes, 24,370 armored vehicles, 350 helicopters and 255,539 drones, 33 ships, 88,332 military and oil tankers, 39,689 air defense systems, and 2 submarines.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the war. In January 2026, CSIS figures showed that Ukraine suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov says the use of mechanized vehicles has changed the way warfare is fought. Ground vehicles can deliver food, weapons, and medicine to soldiers, and are capable of transporting the wounded.
Victor Pavlov, a lieutenant in the Ukrainian army, said that ground-based robots make up 90% of their weapons. Ukraine says it has carried out 7,000 strikes using ground-based machines since January.
Oleksandr, who is in charge of training soldiers in the Ukrainian army, says that many jobs that used to be done by people are now being done by machines. War has changed, with more drones in the sky, making it difficult to go to rescue people.
Russia also pioneered the use of mechanized warfare. The 'Courier' is a self-propelled ground vehicle that can carry 250 kilograms of explosives and weapons that can deploy troops anywhere.
On April 6, 2026, Russia unveiled a ground-based drone called the Bagulnik-82, a modified weapon with an added arm that allows it to launch missiles up to four kilometers away.
This is a good machine that is used in situations where the lives of soldiers are in danger and where enemy aircraft are likely to attack them.
The war between Ukraine and Russia continues to change the face of warfare, with the use of machines far surpassing humans.
