Learn about the history of PSG, which won the Champions League for the second time in a row, and has also won the French League 1 (11) titles in the last 13 years.
French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) cemented their place as one of Europe's greatest clubs after becoming only the second team to win back-to-back Champions League titles. They achieved the feat on penalties in the final against English club Arsenal, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Budapest, Hungary after regular time and extra time.
The victory extended PSG's record of 12 months ago when they defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in another Champions League final. In doing so, PSG became the first team to retain the trophy since Real Madrid, who won three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018.
PSG are also only the second team to do so since the Champions League was launched in 1993. In the 71-year history of the competition, PSG are only the 10th team to win consecutive trophies. They are also the first French team to win the European Cup/Champions League in consecutive seasons.
In PSG's history in the Champions League, the team has been looking for the trophy for years but has failed to win it in recent years. They reached the final for the first time in 2020 but lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich. Two consecutive victories in 2025 and 2026 have already taken them to a new level in the history of French football.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have reached the Champions League final for only the second time in their history. The first was in 2006, when they lost 2-1 to Barcelona. Arsenal will not win a Champions League final until 2026, despite being one of the Premier League's strongest teams for many years.
After the 2026 final, PSG coach Luis Enrique said: βItβs a mix for me. Joy, exhaustion β everything. But this is the best moment of this season. We still have the trophy, two in a row, itβs amazing.β
In the match itself, Arsenal took the lead in the sixth minute through Kai Havertz. But PSG paid off in the second half through Ousmane DembΓ©lΓ©'s penalty in the 65th minute, forcing extra time and penalties that saw PSG take the lead.
PSG's consecutive victories have made them one of the top teams in Europe in a very short time, especially since they have changed the face of football in France. The fact that the first French team has won the Champions League twice in a row is a major milestone in the country's history.
On the other hand, Arsenal, despite losing, returning to the final after 20 years is a sign that they are once again among the top teams in Europe. But for now, the Champions League trophy remains a dream, while PSG has already written its name in the history books of the competition.
