The United States Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, has been accused of bias in military promotion practices. Some soldiers say that the changes in the promotion process for some soldiers appear to be racially biased, gender-neutral, and inequitable.
This comes as Hegseth recently removed Randy George, the former US Army Chief of Staff, from his post, leaving him a year short of his term in that position. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said that was incorrect because Hegseth promotes people based on their abilities.
The 12 black soldiers and women in question were arrested during promotions, but other military officials say the process by which the soldiers were suspended is unclear. There are three marines who were suspended, all black, and none of them have been investigated for any wrongdoing.
US President Donald Trump and Hegseth have repeatedly expressed their disapproval of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) approach. Trump recently asked airlines to stop using it when hiring pilots.
The DEI is a method of hiring people based on their abilities, not their race. But others argue that the DEI is effective in achieving gender equality in the workplace.
The military says that the manner in which the soldiers were suspended is unclear because there were about three marines suspended, all black, and none of them were investigated to at least confirm that there were any crimes committed against them.
The Pentagon says soldiers are promoted based on their ability, but others point out that the promotion process is subject to bias.
