Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Store have criticized US President Donald Trump's claim that NATO forces are not operating on the border in Afghanistan, calling it a lie.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Meloni responded to Article 5 after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when NATO relied on the principle for the first and last time in its history as a show of solidarity with the United States.
"Italy was immediately called upon, along with its allies, to provide thousands of troops and take over full responsibility for Regional Command West, one of the most important regions in the ongoing international mission," the statement said.
According to Meloni, Italy has paid an "incalculable price," as 53 soldiers have been killed and more than 700 injured in operations, security projects and training of Afghan forces over nearly 20 years.
For this reason, votes to reduce the role of NATO countries in Afghanistan are unacceptable, especially when they come from a member country, as the statement suggests.
For his part, Store declared that Trump's words were "a little disrespectful."
"The dead, their descendants and those who served in Afghanistan deserve to be spoken of with truth and respect," Store wrote in a statement posted on Facebook. "This statement by the US president is disrespectful. I understand that the unemployed and their brothers also have a strong response to this.
Trump said on Fox Business on Thursday that the United States did not need troops from other countries in the South African war, where they were "just here, just behind the scenes."
