More than 50 people, mostly students, were killed in a five-story building collapse in New Delhi, India.
On September 6, 2026, a five-story building collapsed in the Satya Niketan area, southwest of New Delhi, the capital of India. The building was located near schools and hostels, which is why many students are believed to have been inside.
Eyewitnesses said at least 50 people were inside the building when it collapsed. Neighbors said some included students and small business owners who worked on the ground floors.
Police sources in the area say that so far 1 person has been confirmed dead, while 2 others are in critical condition and are being treated at a nearby hospital. 6 people have been pulled out of the rubble alive.
Firefighters, police and paramedics rushed to the scene. Rock-pulling equipment was used to search for others who might still be alive under the rubble.
New Delhi Mayor Rekha Gupta said that people in buildings near the scene were evacuated due to safety concerns. “Every effort is being made to rescue those trapped under the rubble,” she said.
Police said the building was between 40 and 50 years old. Authorities are investigating whether there were structural defects or whether recent heavy rains had damaged its structure.
The authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the move. They will look into whether the building met the requirements, whether any structures were violated, and whether the building owner was involved.
Students from schools and colleges near Satya Niketan have expressed concern over the incident. Many schools in the area have cancelled classes for the day as rescue operations continue.
