In Nyagatare District, 91 people were arrested in the past month for drug use including marijuana and alcohol. He added that apart from the drugs that people were already being punished for, now there are also those who make illegal alcohol that kills people. He said: "Among these people who have been imprisoned are those who made illegal alcohol. They are people who took harmful substances, mixed them and then put them on the market, and those who drank them started to have their internal organs damaged, and some even died."
Some of those who used drugs warn their friends that they are making a living from it. Hakorimana Claude says: “I was caught and punished for it where I was imprisoned for two years. When I returned, I found that others had abandoned me, what I called profit turned out to be loss for me”.
Drug awareness campaigns are ongoing in Nyagatare District, where seized drugs are displayed in front of residents so that they have sufficient information about them and their consequences.
