At least 22 people have been confirmed dead after a fire broke out at a wedding venue in the DRC.
On the night of Friday to Saturday, a fire broke out in the PanacΓ©e hall in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The room is located next to the national museum and was used for festive events.
DRC authorities said at least 22 people had died in the fighting. The government quickly declared the toll provisional as the counting and identification of people was ongoing. A statement from the ministry of information said that the dead included 14 women and 8 men.
Authorities said five injured people remain in hospital receiving treatment. Another 21 were treated and discharged but will have to return to hospital for further assessment within the next 48 hours.
Before the government announcement, the mayor of Lingwala commune, where the fire occurred, had told the media that the death toll could be at least 22, while Radio RFI quoted a local authority as saying that the bride and groom at the party were alive but the woman suffered serious injuries.
The government has not confirmed the type of event that was taking place, but some DRC media reports suggest that there was a wedding reception at the PanacΓ©e hall when the fire started.
Health and security agencies are currently working to identify the bodies whose owners have not yet been identified. Doctors are being asked to report on the injured so that they can be properly accounted for.
The Ministry of Security has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and whether anyone was involved. Authorities have promised that the results will be announced to the public when they are complete.
The DRC government has assured the public that it will continue to keep them informed of the situation. You can also follow more news on Tugere News on YouTube and on RFI, which are continuing to monitor the story.
