RIB arrests Habarurema suspected of seducing and raping girls, raping a child
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested Habarurema Jean Dโamour, who is accused of sexually abusing various girls, promising them jobs. Investigations revealed that the man used a method of deceiving girls who were looking for jobs, and then raped them.
Habarurema was on a WhatsApp group called โshaka umukunziโ, where he was exposed to job advertisements. When he saw a girl who had posted that she needed work, he would secretly write to her, telling her that he could find her a job in Shyorongi. When they agreed, he would send her a ticket, tell her to meet him, and then take her to a forest near his home.
When he arrived, he would rape them, strip them of everything they owned, and threaten to kill them. Some of the girls he attempted to rape managed to escape, while one even tried to fight him off, resulting in a knife wound.
The girls he committed crimes against were from different areas including Kigali City, Kamonyi District and Bugesera. Among them was a minor, and he was charged with child rape.
Charges against him
RIB says that Habarurema is being charged with three crimes: sexual assault, criminal trespass to murder, and child rape. These crimes carry severe penalties under Rwandan law.
Behind the Scenes: Social Media Scams*
This incident has once again highlighted the dangers of using social media to scam people, especially job seekers. In Rwanda and other countries, criminals continue to use WhatsApp, Facebook and Telegram to recruit people with false job opportunities or financial assistance.
RIB thanked the information that led to the man's arrest, and warned everyone to be cautious when meeting with people who promise them jobs or other things. It asked the public to avoid meeting people they do not know well, especially in inaccessible areas, and to report information promptly when they see evidence of a crime.
