The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has announced that it has launched an investigation into the death of Ishimwe Odile, a young woman who recently died at the Kigali University Hospital (CHUK). The RIB also confirmed that it has arrested a nurse suspected of raping her.

Ishimwe's death has sparked a huge debate on social media after her brother posted a video claiming that she was raped by a hospital staff member before she died. He said Ishimwe was in the intensive care unit (ICU), where patients are not allowed to have family visits, and was therefore cared for only by hospital staff. It is believed that this is when she was raped.

Although Ishimwe was too ill to speak, she reportedly wrote on a piece of paper that she had been raped by a hospital worker. Her family also alleged that there was suspicion of mismanagement of medication, with some of the medication purchased for the patient not reaching him but being hidden or used for the benefit of hospital staff.

In a press conference on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, RIB Spokesperson, Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, confirmed that an investigation had begun. He said that on March 19, 2026, RIB received a complaint from a 29-year-old woman who accused a nurse of sexually assaulting her. The nurse was immediately arrested, detained, and her file was forwarded to the Public Prosecution Service.

Dr. Murangira said that the statements made by the deceased's family after his death are also being investigated to determine if there was any negligence or wrongdoing in his care. RIB stressed that it will follow up on the entire matter until the truth is revealed.

RIB has asked anyone with information related to this matter to come forward, so that a thorough investigation can be conducted and justice can be served.
