The Japanese Embassy in Rwanda has provided a grant of $89,000 (129,453,000 Rwandan Francs) to construct a building that will support children with intellectual disabilities in Nyamata Sector, Bugesera District.
The agreement to provide this funding was signed on January 26, 2026, between the Japanese Embassy in Rwanda and AVEH Umurerwa, an organization that assists children with intellectual disabilities.
Once completed, this building is expected to contribute to the organization’s efforts to increase the number of children with intellectual disabilities it can accommodate, as it will consist of 102 rooms and 96 beds.
"This grant will also be used to purchase equipment to be placed in this building, to buy 22 bicycles for people with disabilities, and sports equipment that will assist these children.
The Japanese Ambassador to Rwanda, Nakajo Kazuya, stated, 'I am pleased to sign one of my first agreements as the Japanese Ambassador to Rwanda aimed at helping children with intellectual disabilities.
He further explained that this support was provided through the Japanese Government’s program to fund small-scale projects in developing countries."
The Executive Director of AVEH, Umurerwa Ndayambaje Eugene, stated that this building will help them address several challenges they faced, including the lack of facilities to accommodate children with intellectual disabilities.
He said, “We were previously accommodating about 20 children, but once this building is complete, we will be able to take in over 100 children. This will reduce the burden on the government to care for children with intellectual disabilities and help parents of children with such conditions.”
The AVEH organization has been operating for over 20 years, having started in 2005. Currently, it is supporting a total of 120 children, of whom 20 live in the organization's center while the others are supported in their families.
