Many members of the family of the leader of the AFC/M23 coalition fighting the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo, have been imprisoned, while others have fled the country.
One of the former detainees is Nangaa's brother, Baseane Nangaa Putters, who is currently in Ndolo military prison. He and other escapees, including the wife of the AFC/M23 leader, Yvette Lubanda, and his brother-in-law, Fabrice Lubala, have been sentenced to death.
The latest arrest is Nangaa's brother, Didier Ilaani Nangaa. He has been in custody for more than 10 days in the intelligence service's cell in the town of Isiro in Haut-Uélé province, where he is suspected of funding AFC/M23 through mining.
Another of Nangaa's brothers, Christophe Baseane Nangaa, fled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates when he learned that security forces were hunting him down to arrest him.
Christophe served as Governor of Haut-Uélé and Senator. After fleeing, the DRC government seized all of his assets, accusing him of working with the AFC/M23, even though he claims to support the regime of President Félix Tshisekedi.
Nangaa's family explains that there are about 10 others who are being held by his cousins in various cells, accused of collaborating with AFC/M23, while others have fled to various countries, including Africa and the Americas, in the past two years.
The arrest and flight of the Nangaa family members coincides with ongoing searches of their homes and properties in the Wamba territory in Haut-Uélé, where weapons are suspected to be hidden.
