A boat capsized in the Nguse River of Lake Albert in Uganda, 1 person survived.
Ugandan police said on April 29, 2026, that a boat carrying between 35 and 40 people capsized on April 28 on the Nguse River, near Lake Albert in the west of the country. So far, only one person has survived, while investigations into the cause of the accident and rescue operations are ongoing.
Police said in a statement on X, that there was no list of those on board, so the exact number of those who drowned was not yet known. It is believed that the accident was caused by the boat exceeding its capacity, as well as sailing at night, factors that are often the cause of such accidents on rivers and lakes in East Africa.
Ugandan security forces said that search operations are ongoing along the Nguse River, but the nature of the accident site and darkness have contributed to delays in rescue operations. The survivor is currently receiving medical attention, while the families of the missing are still waiting for news.
Lake Albert, like other rivers and lakes in Uganda, is prone to boat accidents due to poor navigation, inadequate boats and bad weather. In 2023, a boat carrying more than 30 people sank on Lake Victoria, near Entebbe, and in 2018, more than 100 people died on Lake Victoria when a boat capsized.
Many people in western Uganda use boats as their main means of transportation between different areas, but many of the boats used do not meet safety standards. There is also a lack of institutions to track the exact number of passengers, making it difficult to know the exact number of people who drown in accidents.
Ugandan police have urged residents to avoid using boats at night and to ensure that their boats are of the proper capacity before setting off. The accident has put renewed pressure on Ugandan authorities to tighten maritime transport regulations, as such accidents continue to claim lives as many people seek to cross the border or trade with neighboring countries such as DR Congo.
