The Commander of the Ugandan Armed Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced a decision to dismiss employees of the immigration department who have been making it difficult for Rwandans in Uganda to obtain necessary documentation.
He stated that others would be recruited soon. This reflects a desire to address the challenges faced by Rwandans in Uganda, particularly those born and raised there, who have been struggling to obtain documents such as passports.
In 2024, President Yoweri Museveni had stated that the 1995 Constitution grants citizenship to those born in Uganda, descendants of Ugandans, and foreign nationals who wish to obtain it, suggesting that assessments should be conducted at the grassroots level to ensure that Rwandans receive the necessary documentation. However, some are still waiting for solutions.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Museveni, mentioned plans to sign a solidarity agreement between Uganda and Rwanda during his visit to Kigali. He stated that his country is ready to cooperate with Rwanda in times of security challenges
