On Saturday, US President Trump threatened Canada with steep tariffs if it "makes a deal with China" and took a swipe at Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a bid to continue his confrontation with the country after Mr. Carney backtracked on his policies in a widely criticized speech in Davos, Switzerland, last week.
“If Canada makes a deal with China, they will face a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and materials coming into the United States,” Mr. Trump said in a post on the Truth Social website. He referred to Mr. Carney as “Governor Carney,” essentially implying that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
There is no indication that Canada and China are in talks on a major trade deal. Mr. Trump may have been following Mr. Carney’s trip to China last week, where he agreed to cut tariffs on some Chinese electrical goods while China agreed to cut tariffs on some Canadian agricultural products. The engagement was largely focused on bilateral cooperation, but actual trade deals were few and far between.
Canada provided Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, with a detailed picture of the deal with China before it was signed, a senior official with the Canadian Trade Commission said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the details of the talks between the two governments. Mr. Trump spoke highly of Mr. Carney after the deal was signed. (“Good for him,” he said.)
However, he was later removed by the head of state after Mr. Carney's speech in Davos, where Mr. Carney said that the US-led global system was over and urged "leaders" like Canada to stand together to survive in this new and dangerous era.
While he did not mention Mr. Trump or the United States by name, Mr. Carney made clear that using dates as a means of mobilization was a way to mobilize. “In recent times, powerful countries have begun to use trade as weapons, dates as energy, financial transactions as mobilization tools, and even roadblocks as places to reduce their actions,” Mr. Carney said.
