Renowned British environmentalist David Attenborough is set to release a documentary about the gorillas of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, titled "A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough." Produced by Silverback Films, the documentary explores the lives and history of the gorillas that Attenborough first encountered in the Volcanoes National Park nearly 50 years ago [1].
The film, which will be released on Netflix on April 17, 2026, tells the extraordinary story of how David first met a baby gorilla named Pablo, and his journey through life, until he became a Silverback, the leader of the Army Gorillas, and how his descendants live today.
Attenborough says that when he arrived at the location of the gorillas, especially the group consisting of a female and her babies, he was surprised that they allowed him to approach them, which he considered unusual. In the area preparing for the screening of the documentary, Attenborough said: “I remember the first time I met the highland gorillas [.....], they allowed us to approach them.”
He continued by saying that it was at that moment that he encountered the baby gorilla, saying: "I felt something touch my feet and looked down, and it was a baby gorilla called Pablo." Attenborough said that the incident was one of the most important moments in his entire career of making nature films, and the idea of making a story about Pablo's journey began there.
In this documentary, viewers will witness the life journey of Pablo the gorilla as he grows up in the forest of Ibirunga National Park, located in Musanze District, Kinigi Sector, and becomes a Silverback (a leader of the army gorillas), and also shows how his descendants have survived to this day.
This story also reveals how gorillas live in families, how they are managed, and the role they play in the environment, which will help viewers better understand the lives of these unique animals.
Attenborough says that meeting Pablo has profoundly changed his perspective on animals and his work in general. He says that the idea of making this documentary was to help remind the world of the importance of protecting gorillas, to highlight the progress Rwanda has made in protecting them, and to continue to sensitize people to environmental issues.
This documentary will feature exclusive footage, including old footage from when Attenborough first encountered the oryx, and new footage showing their current state of health.
All of this aims to connect the past with the present, demonstrating Rwanda's commitment to preserving its heritage. Gorillas are found only in the countries of BYA, Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC in the world.
