Hopes for a deal between the United States and Iran to end the conflict remain slim. US President Donald Trump has said he will make a final decision on the deal, while Iran says talks are ongoing but no final agreement has been reached.
The speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said his country would not rely on words but on concrete actions from the United States. He added that Iran would not take any steps to implement the entire agreement unless it first sees Washington live up to its commitments.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said talks between the two sides were ongoing, but stressed that no final agreement had been reached. He criticized the US approach to setting conditions for Iran to accept, and criticized what he called US military pressure in the region.
Meanwhile, military operations continue to intensify in the Middle East. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces have crossed the Litani River in Lebanon, while Israeli strikes in the country on Friday were reported to have injured and killed many civilians.
In a diplomatic and security context, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the US military is continuing its security operations in the region, showing an F-16 fighter jet on a mission to monitor the airspace over the Middle East.
At the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the Trump administration plans to spend $1.5 trillion on defense. He called on allies to increase their military spending to at least 3.5 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP), warning that countries that fail to meet that target could see their relationship with Washington changed. Hegseth reiterated that the US remains committed to preventing Iran from ever obtaining nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense praised the talks between Israeli and Lebanese military leaders in Washington, saying they were positive and focused on regional security and stability. The Pentagon reiterated the US’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence. Despite ongoing diplomatic talks, military activity and tensions between the US, Iran and Israel continue to raise concerns that a lasting peace in the region is still far from being achieved.
