President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will send 5,000 additional troops to Poland, a reversal of plans a week after the Pentagon halted a planned deployment of 4,000 troops. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social blog, where he said the decision was based on his good relationship with Poland's new President, Karol Nawrocki, who supported him in last year's presidential election.
Trump did not provide details about the additional troops. He did not say whether they were part of a plan that had been canceled by the Pentagon, or whether they were a separate group with a new military mission. That has left analysts wondering about the true intentions of his military buildup in Europe.
The announcement comes as the White House has signaled it will reduce the number of U.S. troops in Europe, in line with its “America First” policy that prioritizes U.S. interests. The deployment of 5,000 troops to Poland amid a reduction in forces in Europe underscores the special place Poland holds in Trump’s policy because of its position on the battlefields of Russia and Ukraine.
This week, the US announced it would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, following a spat between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran nuclear deal. Trump said Merz had been "embarrassed" by Iranian negotiators during talks, angering the German government.
There is no word on whether the 5,000 troops going to Poland are from the German withdrawal area or from the United States. However, the decision to increase troops in Poland while they are being withdrawn from Germany reflects Trump's strategy to move troops closer to NATO's eastern border, where Poland plays a key role in deterring Russia.
Trump also continued to criticize European NATO countries, saying they are unwilling to join the US in its pressure campaign against Iran, especially in preventing Iran from opening the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is a vital oil shipping route, and its closure would destabilize the global economy.
This approach to increasing troops in Poland could also be seen as a sign that Trump wants to strengthen his relationship with the Nawrocki regime, while seeking to support countries that have committed to increasing their military budgets. It means that US military policy in Europe is increasingly based on political relations rather than on stable NATO programs, which could change the nature of the understanding between the United States and its traditional allies.
