On Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 8:00 am, a major fire broke out at Avenue Kasheke 3, in the Buholo-Kasha area, Bagiramuri Commune, DRC. Images and photos circulating on social media showed children lying suffocating, some dead and others in a coma. Provisional figures indicate that 30 children have died.
This area is home to many residents who build on sheet metal, which makes fires spread very quickly. In total, more than 500 houses were reduced to ashes. Radio Maendeleo arrived at the scene of the accident at 5:15 am and found that the situation was serious and smoke was still rising.
The buildings that were badly damaged included Mogo Primary School and Furaha Primary School. Nothing was left: books, chairs, and other equipment were all destroyed. These schools were full of students during morning classes.
Many students tried to get out quickly, but the thick smoke made it difficult for them to breathe. Some collapsed due to lack of air, while others were injured and fell out of windows and doors. The teachers who managed to rescue the few said it happened in a matter of seconds.
There were tears everywhere. Many women held their eyes, others cried loudly as they waited for news of their children. Many were in Mogo and Furaha schools, not knowing if their children were among the survivors or those who died in the fire.
After the fire, residents and rescue teams immediately began pulling students out of the rubble. Many were taken to nearby health facilities and Bagira Hospital. The Buholo-Kasha district head said that some of the injured were seriously injured in the fire.
By 3:00 p.m., 30 bodies had been counted and taken to the morgue by ambulances. Health authorities also confirmed that some students were in a coma and others were being treated in hospital.
Patrice Mugaruka Buduge, the head of Buholo-Kasha, said the fire started in a house using domestic fuel, and spread quickly due to winds and the way the houses were built nearby. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and the role of residents in extinguishing the fire.
Various associations in Bagira Commune and international organizations have begun providing basic assistance: food, clothing, and medical supplies. Officials have appealed to residents to donate blood and help those who have lost their lives. This incident has once again highlighted the importance of building schools with fire extinguishers and conducting fire drills in schools.
