Idrissa Ouedraogo took Ishimwe Vestine to court
Idrissa Ouedraogo sued Ishimwe Vestine in the Kicukiro Primary Court, requesting that the court order the woman to show him the child she claims to have had, and to order a DNA test. The lawsuit was filed on September 17, 2026.
This happened shortly after Ishimwe Vestine had also filed a lawsuit against Ouedraogo, seeking a divorce. In a copy of IGIHE's report, Ouedraogo says that Ishimwe accused him of assaulting her after learning that he had other wives. Ouedraogo vehemently denies that this ever happened.
In his letter to the court, Ouedraogo said that the most regrettable thing is that since the child he allegedly fathered with Vestine was born, he has never seen her. He says that he has repeatedly asked her to show him the child but Ishimwe has denied him the child.
Ouedraogo says that while he is awaiting the final hearing of the divorce case filed by Ishimwe Vestine, he is requesting the Kicukiro Primary Court to order that he be shown the child that is said to be his. He says that he is sad that he has not seen him yet and that he is about to be separated from his mother.
Ouedraogo expressed concern that if they were to be legally separated, he might never see the child, especially since the mother lives abroad. He said that depriving her of the child is an injustice to the rights of the mother.
Ouedraogo also requested the court, in its discretion, to order DNA testing between him and the child allegedly his. He said this would help him dispel concerns based on Ishimwe's refusal to allow him to meet the child.
He added that DNA testing would also help him continue to fulfill his responsibilities as a father rather than feeling like he is in doubt. If he is the father of the child, he is ready to raise and care for him according to the law.
Under Rwandan law, a child has the right to know his or her parents and to be raised by them. The court can order a DNA test if there is a medical dispute. If the DNA test confirms that he or she is the father, he or she is granted visitation rights and child support responsibilities.
In a letter to the Kicukiro Primary Court, Idrissa Ouedraogo requested that everything be done before the divorce case filed by Ishimwe Vestine begins its trial. The court is now expected to summon both parties to hear if there is any reason why the child should not be shown to him and to decide on a DNA test.
