Gen. Christian Tshiwe, former Commander-in-Chief of the Democratic Republic of Congo's Armed Forces, and 9 of his associates have been brought before a DRC court,
They were brought before the court on Thursday. They were charged with crimes including illegal possession of weapons and treason in an attempt to overthrow President Fรฉlix Tshisekedi.
Gen. Tshiwe became President Tshisekedi's military advisor in 2024, after leaving the post of Chief of Army Staff. He was arrested in July 2025 on suspicion of involvement in a coup attempt.
In a trial on June 4, 2026, Tshiwe and nine other officers were charged with crimes including treason, conspiracy, and illegal possession of weapons. The Kinshasa Military Court heard the case.
The DRC Military Prosecution told the court that from 2020 to July 2025, Gen. Tshiwe and the defendants planned a coup d'รฉtat. It revealed that this plot had been secretly planned for some time.
On July 9, 2025, at the home of Gen. Tshiwe located in Gombe Commune in Kinshasa, a large quantity of weapons were seized. These included 12 RPG-7s, four AK-47s, six PKMs, and three PKM cartridges. 46 rounds of 69 40mm rockets were also seized.
The prosecution added that 4,322 rounds of 7.62x53mm ammunition, one round of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, 18 40mm rockets, and four 40mm Kastor grenades were seized. The prosecution alleged that Gen. Tshiwe possessed all of these weapons and ammunition without authorization.
Abandi bareganwa na Gen. Tshiwe barimo Gen. John Numbi, Gen Maj Maurice Nyembo, Brig Gen John Ngoy wa Kabila, na Brig Gen John Sangwa Muhemedi. Harimo kandi Col Guy Mukombozi Zahinda, Col Pathy Sangwa Lumbu, Col Christophe Tshibangu, nโumusivile Pascal Nyembo Muyumba.
The case highlights the internal security challenges in the DRC, which is still at war in the east. The military prosecution says it will prosecute all crimes against national security and the rule of law.
