On September 7, 2026, during President Paul Kagame's visit to Salalah, Oman, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik presented him with a traditional Omani sword. This took place during a reception held at Al Hosn Palace, where the two leaders exchanged commemorative gifts.
The sword was no ordinary souvenir. It had great value because it was based on centuries of history, the traditions of the Kingdom of Oman and what this country values. Oman said that the exchange of these gifts reflected the “deep friendship and strong ties” between Rwanda and Oman.
For his part, President Kagame presented Sultan Haitham with a Kinyarwanda cane adorned with beads. The cane symbolizes wisdom, leadership, and unity in Rwandan culture. Thus, there was a sharing of values between the two countries.
Although the Omani government has never publicly explained what the sword means to President Kagame, it holds a significant place in the country's history. The national emblem of Oman itself consists of two intertwined swords, above which is a short curved sword called a khanjar.
The symbol is derived from the coat of arms of the Al Bu Said dynasty, which has ruled Oman since the 18th century. The Al Bu Said dynasty was founded in 1744 by Ahmad bin Said Al Busaidi, who became the Imam of Oman. It is from this family that Sultan Haitham descends to this day.
Throughout history, the sword has not only been a tool of war. It has been associated with power, honor, national independence, and the values of the Omani people. The traditional sword and khanjar are often seen in important ceremonies, on national emblems, and as a symbol of their heritage.
In this context, the sword presented to President Kagame can be interpreted as a sign of high honor. Oman is saying that the visiting head of state is being given something that has a strong connection to the history and identity of their country.
This is not the first time Sultan Haitham has presented such a sword, having previously presented it to King Philippe of Belgium during a visit to the royal family. In the same year, the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan*, was also presented with the Sword of Oman after exchanging medals and commemorative gifts.
The exchange of swords underscores that Rwanda and Oman want to strengthen their trade, cultural and diplomatic ties. The fact that President Kagame was presented with such a powerful symbol shows that Oman views Rwanda as a country with dignity and values similar to theirs of peace, independence and respect for heritage.
