Putin arrives in Beijing in China, for talks aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday evening for talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The visit comes shortly after Donald Trump's visit to China, but the Kremlin has said there is no connection between the two.

Officially, Putin came to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Russia and China in 2001. Those years demonstrate how the two countries' relations continue to strengthen, especially in the areas of economy, energy, and security.

The Kremlin says Putin and Xi will discuss key global and regional issues, including the war in Ukraine, security in Asia, and the evolution of international trade. They are also expected to strengthen cooperation between Beijing and Moscow in key areas.

The visit comes as China seeks to maintain strong ties with the United States while also preserving its close ties with Russia. The Kremlin said Putin and Xi will also exchange views on relations between Beijing and Washington.

Since Russia began its war in Ukraine in 2022, it has been hit by severe sanctions from the United States and Europe. During that time, China has become Russia's largest economic partner, sharply increasing its purchases of oil, gas, and other raw materials.

Russia is one of China's largest suppliers of gas and oil, while China supplies technology, industrial equipment, and electric vehicles. Both countries also continue to use their own currencies in trade, to reduce their dependence on the US dollar.

The Beijing-Moscow partnership reflects a new paradigm of international relations, where countries forming an “Eastern Sea” seek to reduce the influence of Western power.
