On July 12, 2026, Rwanda National Police operating in Rulindo District arrested 17 people. They included the founders of a gang called "Aba-Gang" and "Wrong Turn" who were accused of involvement in the murder of two people. Those arrested have been taken to Murambi and Bushoki Police Stations for further investigation.
Information began to emerge when residents contacted local authorities and security forces about a group of men engaged in illegal mining. The group had been calling themselves by various names including ‘General’, ‘Wrong Turn’, and ‘Aba-Gang’. They were said to be terrorizing residents in different parts of Murambi sector.
The group went to Marembo in Murambi Sector and arrested two residents. The men were escorted, severely beaten, and then thrown into Cyinzuzi Sector where they were found dead. It was the residents who saw the bodies and began calling security agencies.
The spokesperson for the Rwanda National Police in the Northern Province, CIP Ngirabakunzi Ignace, said that after receiving urgent information from the public, the Police immediately began searching for the perpetrators. He said, “Initially, 8 people were suspected, but the investigation revealed that there were others who were directly and indirectly involved.”
Among the 17 people arrested, some were residents who learned of the incident and failed to intervene. They were charged with failing to assist a person in danger as provided for in Rwandan law. CIP Ngirabakunzi explained that the law requires every citizen to provide timely information when an illegal act occurs.
So far, a total of 17 people have been detained at two police stations, Murambi and Bushoki. Their files are being prepared to be handed over to the Prosecution for further investigation. Police say investigations are ongoing to determine if there are other people involved.
The Mayor of Rulindo District, Judith Mukanyirigira, arrived at the scene of the crime and spoke to residents. She urged them to continue their cooperation in providing timely information and to avoid joining groups that engage in illegal activities. She said, “Our security is based on cooperation, a citizen should not remain silent when he sees something wrong.”
CIP Ngirabakunzi urged the public to avoid all illegal activities, including illegal mining of precious minerals, as they are a source of violence and theft. He reminded that mining must be carried out in accordance with the law and with proper documentation, and that anyone found involved will be punished by the law.
