The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Botchwey, has congratulated Rwandan President Paul Kagame on the fruitful discussions they held. She said the discussions were filled with optimism for the future of cooperation between the two sides.
Following her talks with President Kagame, Ms. Botchwey, in her message on X, expressed that the Commonwealth is ready to work closely with Rwanda. The Commonwealth is looking forward to working with Rwanda to promote changes aimed at improving the functioning of the Commonwealth.
He highlighted that Rwanda has significant experience in promoting trade and investment. This experience can be used in implementing the new Commonwealth program. This program aims to promote the economy and welfare of the people of its member countries.
Among other things, they discussed preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Meeting, known as CHOGM. The meeting is scheduled to be held in Antigua and Barbuda from 1 to 4 November 2026.
CHOGM is a biennial meeting of the heads of state and government of the Commonwealth. The main objective is to discuss economic, political, educational, technological, and social issues, and to adopt practical measures that are implemented across all member states.
The CHOGM is a closed-door meeting of heads of state, where they review cooperation programs, approve new agreements, and hold events to showcase the host country's progress. It is chaired by the Commonwealth Secretary-General with the assistance of the host country.
Rwanda, which hosted the CHOGM in Kigali in 2022, has further strengthened its role in the community. Rwanda's experience in organizing the summit and in economic development is why the Commonwealth wants to use it to implement new changes aimed at the common interest of its members.

Mu bindi baganiriye kandi bagarutse ku myiteguro y’Inama y’Abakuru b’Ibihugu na za Guverinoma ya Commonwealth, izwi nka CHOGM. Iyi nama iteganyijwe kubera muri Antigua and Barbuda kuva ku wa 1 kugeza ku wa 4 Ugushyingo 2026.
CHOGM ni inama ihuza abakuru b’ibihugu na za guverinoma by’ibihugu bigize Commonwealth rimwe mu myaka ibiri. Intego nyamukuru ni ukuganira ku bibazo by’ubukungu, politiki, uburezi, ikoranabuhanga, n’imibereho myiza, no gufata ingamba zifatika zishyirwa mu bikorwa mu bihugu byose bigize umuryango.
Uko CHOGM ikora ni uko abakuru b’ibihugu bahurira mu nama z’ibanga, bakarebera hamwe gahunda z’ubufatanye, bakemezwa amasezerano mashya, kandi hakabaho n’ibikorwa byo kumurikira iterambere ry’igihugu cyakira inama. Umunyamabanga Mukuru wa Commonwealth ayiyobora hamwe n’ubufasha bw’igihugu cyakira.
