The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, said that Rwanda appreciates the United States for its role in seeking lasting peace in the region.
He said that Rwanda wants the United States to be a mediator in peace talks between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but that this mediator should be impartial.
Minister Nduhungirehe reiterated this on the evening of June 4, 2026, when he joined the United States Embassy in Rwanda in celebrating the 250th anniversary of America's independence. The ceremony, held in Kigali, was attended by representatives of various countries and Rwandan leaders.
The American Independence Day celebration comes as Rwanda and the United States celebrate 64 years of partnership. These years have been marked by cooperation in various sectors, including health, education, security, and the economy. Both countries emphasized that this partnership has contributed to Rwanda’s development.
Minister Nduhungirehe said that over the past 60 years, Rwanda-US cooperation has yielded tangible results. He gave examples of support in the areas of health, investment, trade, innovation, and security. He said that this partnership has improved the lives of the Rwandan people, and that Rwanda is proud of it.
He said, "The partnership between Rwanda and the United States is a partnership that has yielded results in various areas such as health, investment, trade, innovation, security, and others, so that we work together to improve the lives of the Rwandan people and we are proud of it."
Minister Nduhungirehe also said that the United States is a good partner for Rwanda in the field of precious metals trade. He said that the United States is the sixth largest exporter of tungsten minerals from Rwanda.
Last October, Rwanda exported tungsten ore to the US market for the first time, under a bilateral mining cooperation agreement between the two countries. The start of trade paved the way for further exports of other Rwandan minerals and products.
This partnership between Rwanda and the United States continues to expand in various areas. Both sides express their desire to continue working together to promote peace in the region, increase trade, and advance healthcare and technology. Minister Nduhungirehe concluded by thanking the United States for its continued support to Rwanda.
