The President of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, arrived in Rwanda on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10:52 a.m. He attended the African conference on the use of nuclear energy in Africa, known as _NEISA – Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa_.

At Kigali International Airport, President Suluhu was received by Dr. Usta Kayitesi, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting, which is being held at the Kigali Convention Centre, brings together heads of state, leaders, scientists and other stakeholders from across Africa.

 

NEISA will last for three days, from May 19 to 21, 2026. This is the second time Rwanda has hosted the conference, and it will focus on modern technologies that would help African countries generate affordable and reliable nuclear power.

Rwanda has been developing nuclear power for nearly nine years. The country's goal is to have a nuclear power plant by 2030, and training for the necessary personnel has already begun.

In the long term, Rwanda has set a target of having approximately 1.5 GW of nuclear power generation capacity by 2050. This is an important part of the country's approach to ensuring energy security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Forums like NEISA help African countries share knowledge, raise funds, and establish common standards for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. This is crucial as Africa seeks to increase its nuclear capacity to support its industry and economy.

President Suluhu's visit follows that of President Paul Kagame to Tanzania in early May 2026. This left the two countries committed to further cooperation in various sectors, including energy, agriculture, and cross-border trade.

U Rwanda rumaze imyaka hafi icyenda mu bikorwa byo guteza imbere ingufu za nucléaire. Intego y’igihugu ni ukuba gifite uruganda rutunganya amashanyarazi akomoka kuri nucléaire mu 2030, kandi abakozi bakenewe muri urwo rwego bamaze gutangira guhugurwa.
