The President of the United States, Donald Trump, agreed to reduce tariffs on goods imported from India to 18%, down from 50%, due to India's decision to halt purchases of oil from Russia.
President Trump had recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, in addition to an earlier 25% tariff related to the purchase of Russian oil.
Trump stated that India's intention to start purchasing oil from the United Statesβand possibly also from Venezuelaβdemonstrates a strengthening relationship and collaboration.
In a social media post, Trump said: "In addition to the friendship and respect with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as requested, starting now we have agreed on trade agreements between the United States and India, where America will reduce the tariff to 18%."
Trump recently stated that Prime Minister Modi agreed that India would purchase American goods worth over $500 billion, including products related to energy, technology, agriculture, and other categories.
Following a reduction in tariffs and discussions between both parties, Prime Minister Modi expressed his satisfaction in representing the people of India and engaging in talks with his close friend, President Trump, regarding the lowered tariffs on these goods.
Last August, Trump had doubled tariffs on products imported from India, raising them to 50%, aiming to put pressure on India to stop purchasing oil from Russia.
At the beginning of February, it was mentioned that fuel prices might rise again if India does not reduce its purchases from Russia and starts to engage more significantly with the United States.
India relies heavily on imported oil, sourcing about 90% of its oil from abroad. Since 2022, it has been increasing its purchases from Russia, but recently it has been reducing the volume of oil it imports from that country, decreasing from 1.2 million barrels per day to around 800,000, according to reports from the British news agency Reuters.
This reduction in fuel taxes was announced after India and the European Union (EU) reached a comprehensive trade agreement (free trade agreement).
