The United States and Iran have agreed to an irreversible ceasefire.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that both the United States and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire. Pakistan is acting as a mediator between the two sides.
He made the announcement on the night of June 14, 2026. This comes after the leaders of the United States and Pakistan announced that they would sign a ceasefire agreement with Iran. Iran had not yet made it clear whether it would sign it because of continued opposition in that country.
Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that after intensive talks between the two sides, the countries approved a draft ceasefire agreement. He said: βBoth sides agreed to immediately and permanently cease military operations, including a ceasefire in Lebanon.β
He said that the actual signing ceremony of the agreement will take place on Friday, June 19 in Switzerland. Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked the United States and Iran for their commitment to finding a solution that stops the war through diplomatic means.
He also thanked the countries that helped mediate between Washington and Tehran. In particular, he recalled the efforts made by Qatar to bring the two countries to an understanding. He said: βI also thank the far-sighted leadership of Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their significant contribution to this issue.β
The Prime Minister of Pakistan said that the countries that are coordinating the US and Iran will help in various discussions that will take place this week, including technical ones that precede the implementation of the agreement.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the news from Pakistan. He said that the US and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire. He said: βThe deal with Iran is now over. I have now declared the Strait of Hormuz open, and I have also declared the US Navy to be removed from the Strait of Hormuz.β
The war began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran. They killed several top Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes. The United States also blocked oil shipments to and from Iranian ports, causing the global economy to collapse and oil prices to hit $130 a barrel.
Countries such as Qatar and the United Kingdom have congratulated both sides for ratifying the agreement, and it is expected that US Vice President JD Vance will travel to Geneva, Switzerland, to sign the agreement.
