The United States launched another attack on southern Iran today, May 26, 2026.
The United States has launched new strikes in southern Iran, targeting alleged missile and missile storage and launch sites and naval bases near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping lanes.
The US military said the strikes were aimed at βdefending and deterring potential attacks on US forcesβ in the Middle East, particularly in the Gulf region. In a statement, the military said the aim was to disrupt Iranβs ability to launch attacks on US interests and its allies.
A spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, Capt. Tim Hawkins, said the United States will continue to take measures to protect its troops and deter any threat to regional security. βWe will continue to deter the enemy and use all means to protect our troops and U.S. interests, even as diplomatic efforts continue,β he said.
The attacks were concentrated in the Bandar Abbas area, a major Iranian city on the Persian Gulf coast, known for its large naval base and proximity to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media confirmed that a large explosion was heard in the area.
Iranian authorities have not made any official statements about the damage or casualties in the attacks. However, officials in the city of Bandar Abbas said an investigation has been launched to determine the full extent of the damage.
Despite the attacks, Iran has maintained that its talks with the United States are progressing well, although many issues remain. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said the two sides are continuing to converge on some issues, but that reaching a final agreement will not be quick.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there was still a chance for a deal, and that Iranian envoys were scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister of Qatar on May 26 to continue talks. βWe will see if there are any further steps that can be taken,β he said. βThere is still a lot that needs to be agreed upon for both sides to agree on a final draft.β Rubio added that President Donald Trump is ready to support and sign the deal when they are ready.
The tension between the United States and Iran has been escalating since February 28, 2026, affecting the global economy, especially since the Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of the world's daily oil. Analysts say that the continued escalation of these attacks could cause a serious disruption to the international oil market and raise the prices of its products around the world.
