The US has deployed 53 fighter jets and other aircraft to the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran
The planes, including 31 C-17 Globemaster IIIs, 7 C-5 Galaxy, and 9 KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft, were spotted flying over Europe and refueling at the US Air Force base in England, RAF Lakenheath ¹ ² ³.
The aircraft are likely headed to the Middle East, possibly carrying soldiers and equipment. Three F-22 Raptor fighter jets also flew from the US to RAF Lakenheath before continuing to the Middle East.
The USS Gerald R Ford, one of the largest naval vessels in the world, was seen moving from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea near the Middle East, adding to the US military presence in the region.
The deployment comes as President Donald Trump has given Iran a 10-15 day deadline to determine whether talks between the two sides will result in a deal or war. Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated due to civil unrest in Iran, which began in December 2025.
The US has also positioned other military assets in the region, including E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, F-35 stealth strike fighters, and F-22 air superiority jets. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group is already operating in the ArabianÂ
Air travel analyst Sam Wise notes that large-scale passenger and cargo flights are not uncommon, but the recent deployment is unusual in its scale.
