US President Donald Trump said that Iran's military shot down a US Apache helicopter. He said the US would retaliate if it was confirmed. He made the remarks in a message on the Truth Social website on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Trump wrote that he had been informed by the US military that late Monday night, Iran shot down one of the Apache helicopters. He said the aircraft was conducting security patrols in the Strait of Hormuz.
He went on to say that the US would respond to the attack no matter what. That raised concerns about continued tension between Washington and Tehran, as the two countries have long been at odds.
The US Department of Defense said that on Monday, June 7, 2026, their plane with two pilots on board crashed. But the pilots were not rescued alive, which was due to the involvement of underwater drones. It did not say that it was shot down by the Iranian regime.
Iran has never claimed responsibility for the downing of the plane. But it has repeatedly said that anything it sees in the Strait of Hormuz will be shot down without authorization. This reflects Tehran's stance on protecting this vital waterway.
US forces have been blocking the Strait of Hormuz since February, when they carried out major strikes on Iran. This has added to the deteriorating relations between the two countries after a series of military actions in the Arab region.
