Axel Rudakubana, a British citizen born to Rwandan parents, was sentenced to prison in Burundi after killing three of his neighbors' children.
Axel Rudakubana, 20, is back in court after being found guilty of murdering three children in Southport, and is now facing a new charge of attempting to murder a prison guard with hot water mixed with sugar. The prosecution told Westminster Magistrates' Court that the incident took place on May 8 at Belmarsh Prison, one of the most secure and best-managed prisons in the UK. Rudakubana allegedly made a mixture of 'prison napalm', as it is called, by mixing very hot water boiled in a kettle with sugar and applying it to the body.
As prosecutor Catherine Pattison explained to the court, Rudakubana first warned the guard that he was going to throw hot water at him, even though he had asked him not to put any more pressure on him. He then actually threw it at him with the intention of causing serious injury.
The prison guard was fortunately not seriously injured as he was immediately treated by doctors and returned to work shortly after. However, the prosecution says that the act was planned because Rudakubana also had other materials related to the crime.
During the hearing, which was held via video link, Rudakubana was seen in his cell, wearing prison clothes. He did not say much, other than confirming his identity and date of birth. He also expressed his belief that prison guards were bathing his food.
The case follows another in which he was convicted of the brutal murders of three children in a Southport attack. The children were Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, Bebe King, 6, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, who were attending a dance class.
For the murder, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court, a sentence that caused much controversy in the UK due to the severity of the crime. He now continues to exhibit poor behavior in prison, raising security concerns.
The prosecution stated that this was not the first time he had attempted to harm prison staff, as he also faces other charges including possession of an illegal weapon such as using a sharp stone and attempting to injure another prison guard on different occasions.
The court ruled that Rudakubana will remain in custody until October 19 when he will appear again in the High Court on the new charges against him. Prison officials say they are continuing to implement strict measures to control him because he is considered a high-risk prisoner.
