US and Iran agree to 60-day ceasefire, 2 days before both countries resume hostilities
The United States and Iran have agreed to a 60-day ceasefire extension in their war, although the final decision will be made by Donald Trump. The move comes after the two countries recently clashed, with the US firing missiles at Iran, which retaliated by attacking US bases in Kuwait.
Reuters reported that the two sides had reached an agreement on a 60-day ceasefire. However, this would only be implemented if Trump approved it. The agreement would set out a framework for studying various aspects of a permanent ceasefire that has been in place for three months.
Among the key issues to be discussed is how Iran can abandon its uranium enrichment program for nuclear weapons, one of the issues that has fueled the ongoing conflict between the two sides.
Trump has repeatedly said that they are close to ending the war. However, on May 27, 2026, during a cabinet meeting, he said that he was not yet satisfied with the talks they were having with Iran. He also said that the United States does not want to ease sanctions on Iran, even though Tehran wants them.
The latest US strikes on Iran include shooting down five Iranian jets, destroying missile sites, and targeting a shipping line near the Strait of Hormuz. The aim is to deter further attacks on US forces.

The US-Iran war began on February 28 and has had a devastating impact on the global economy, as it has blocked the passage of 20% of the world's daily oil consumption, thus causing the global economy to collapse.
