Members of the Parliamentary Assembly have come to the defense of journalists who are working in a profession often regarded with respect, yet many of them are struggling due to the financial challenges they face in this sector, which is viewed as the fourth estate.
A recent report by the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) indicated that approximately 44.5% of journalists earn salaries below 200,000 Rwandan francs per month, which is insufficient for them to perform their work effectively. The report also highlighted that 42.9% of media outlets offer employment contracts to their employees, while 28.6% provide social security benefits, a figure that matches those that offer annual leave.
Around 28.6% of media outlets pay their employees salaries based on their revenues.
Despite these challenges, the RGB report shows that this sector continues to receive support for its development. For instance, in the 2024/25 period, the sector was granted over 286 million Rwandan francs in funding.
