The Iranian government has sentenced prominent singer Parastoo Ahmadi to 74 lashes after she appeared on stage without wearing traditional Iranian clothing. She was wearing a traditional Iranian dress and was wearing women's perfume, which is not acceptable in Iranian culture.

Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi and seven others who performed on YouTube have been sentenced to 74 lashes each after being accused of publishing content that violates the country's culture and morals, the ruling said.
Based on a performance Ahmadi gave in late 2024, which was posted on YouTube, she was seen singing without a hijab, the headscarf worn by women in Iran. The singer was accompanied by a pianist, a guitarist, and others dressed in black.
Ahmadi was dressed in a way that was against Iranian culture and had applied perfume to her face and lips. She did this at a time when Iranian men and women were not allowed to behave in such a way, and were required to dress modestly according to religious and state laws.
The performance was viewed by more than three million people on the artist's YouTube channel and other platforms. Afterwards, Tahmineh Monzavi, the artist's videographer, said: "We were sentenced to two years of artistic bans, not allowed to leave the country, and 74 shillings each."
Iranian authorities say her actions violate the country's code of conduct and dress code, which requires all women to wear the hijab in public, and artists must adhere to strict guidelines on what they are allowed to do.
The performance, which went viral on social media and attracted a large audience, has become one of the most controversial artistic events in Iran and abroad. The debate has focused on the country's harsh laws on women and artists, as well as the right to express themselves through art.
