Attack on the White House while Trump was in a press conference

A man armed with multiple guns and knives stormed the White House while President Donald Trump was having a dinner with top reporters and other senior officials. The man shot one of the security guards, but the bullet grazed his vest, which was not pierced by the bullets he was wearing.

Security forces quickly surrounded him and arrested him before he could leave or hurt anyone else. The Associated Press reported that Trump was not injured, but guests at the dinner quickly ducked under the table after hearing gunshots outside the room.

Some attendees reported hearing what sounded like five gunshots, believed to be from five armed individuals. The room was quickly filled with security guards who began escorting the leaders away, while the White House press secretary was heard saying, "We'll be ready for this again."

Police identified the man as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Trump called him a "sick man," saying, "When you're useful, they hunt you down. When you're useless, they take revenge." Two hours later, he said they believed he acted alone, with no other people behind the attack.

Among the leaders at the dinner were President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. All were escorted out of the room without injury.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said there was no evidence of any other involvement in the attack. This is the third time since 2024 that there has been an assassination attempt or shooting at a Trump residence. She said greater security is needed than ever, saying, “We will not allow anyone to take over our people.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said charges related to the attack are being prepared, and Allen is expected to appear in court on Monday, April 27, 2026.
