India and Africa have stoped their India-Africa Forum Summit aimed at strengthening cooperation and collaboration due to the Ebora pandemic in Rdc.
India and the African Union have decided to postpone the India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled for next week in New Delhi, citing the ongoing health crisis in parts of Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement issued by the African Union and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, both stressed that the safety and health of people take precedence over all other priorities. It was stated that for the meeting to be meaningful and promote cooperation, the threat of the ongoing pandemic must first be mitigated.
The decision comes as DR Congo authorities say the number of Ebola cases and deaths continues to rise. Health officials in the country say 159 people have died, with 51 new cases reported in recent days. Experts say the true number could be much higher because reports are slow to reach authorities in some areas.
Ebola is a highly contagious disease that spreads through bodily fluids. What is clear at this time is that health workers and rural communities are the most concerned, as protection and treatment options are still limited.
India, as a long-standing partner of Africa, immediately said it stood by the African Union in dealing with this problem. It expressed its readiness to increase support in the field of medical equipment, vaccines, and training of doctors. India also called on all countries to play their part in helping DR Congo prevent the spread of the disease.
The India-Africa Forum Summit was to be a platform to discuss cooperation in trade, technology, energy, and health. However, due to this urgent need, the two leaders agreed that addressing the health issue is the foundation of sustainable development. A new date will be set when the situation has eased.
The African Union has once again called on member states to put in place effective measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. It has also called on international partners to continue supporting research and building the capacity of primary health care facilities.
In conclusion, both sides highlighted that India-Africa cooperation is not only based on consultations, but also on rapid action in times of need. It is hoped that in the coming days, assistance will be increased to control Ebola, and the India-Africa Forum Summit will be held at a time when both sides will benefit from the positive outcomes.
