US envoys Witkoff and Kushner sent to Islamabad to meet with Abbas Araqchi, in preparation for Iran-US talks
The United States announced that President Donald Trump's special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, traveled to Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 25, 2026. They arrived to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who arrived in Islamabad on April 24 for a scheduled visit.
Although the two sides are scheduled to meet, Iran has not confirmed that there will be talks with the United States. He said that Araqchi's visit is a normal one aimed at maintaining good relations with Pakistan and discussing security issues in the Middle East, and then he will continue in Oman and Russia. Iran has recently announced that it has no plans to return to the talks because it sees the United States as unmoved.
On the other hand, Pakistan is hopeful that the talks can take place, as it is fully prepared and some roads have been closed. These talks were expected on April 21, 2026, but they could not take place because Iran did not confirm its participation. The first one, which took place on April 12, 2026, lasted 21 hours but yielded nothing.
Iran has outlined 10 points that must be prioritized for a deal to end the war. These include ending the wars in Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen, fully opening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting sanctions on Iran, releasing Iranian assets seized by the United States, and paying reparations. Iran also pledges not to develop nuclear weapons.
The United States is demanding that Iran halt its nuclear weapons program, open the Strait of Hormuz, stop supporting militant groups, and stop attacking countries in the Middle East. President Trump has threatened to destroy it if that fails.
The current concern is the war-torn Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil passes. Iran reopened it on April 17 after a truce between Israel and Hezbollah, but closed it again on April 18 after the US continued to close Iranian ports. This has added to the global economic turmoil, making the talks in Islamabad crucial.
