The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has criticized artists who, considering the 1994 Genocide Remembrance Day, are taking their artistic work outside Rwanda as if the commemoration is not their concern.
Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, spokesperson for RIB, said that artists who emerged in 2025, going abroad to perform their artistic works as if the memory is not their concern, is cowardly. He said, “Last year, we saw some people who were doing live shows on TikTok, which you think is really fun. There are also artists who are leaving the country to perform their art elsewhere, that is indeed an act of cowardice.”
Dr. Murangira stressed that remembering concerns every Rwandan, no one is left out. He said, “Remembering is for all of us, not for one group so that you feel that if you are famous it does not concern you. It is like harvesting the seeds we have planted and then going to the battle for the unity of Rwandans and moving forward”.
The leader also reminded social media users that during the period of mourning, it is not the time to share hate speech with others and support it, reminding them that the relevant authorities are vigilant and that anyone caught doing so will be punished.
He said, "Social media was not created to be used to spread Genocide ideology, belittlement, denial, and hate speech or to incite division and discrimination. Whatever you do, wherever you are, sooner or later, wherever you are, you will not be far from the hand of justice, which will surely reach you."
Dr. Murangira continues to say that there are those who fall into the trap of spreading hate messages, where they take them from where they were and share them with others, who in turn put up signs agreeing with their content, pointing out that the law punishes all of them as those who trivialized the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) says that throughout 2025, it received 483 complaints related to Genocide ideology and trivialization, including 207 that occurred during the 100 days of remembrance [from April 7 to July 4].
These allegations had increased because in 2024, RIB had received 454 allegations of Genocide ideology, including 191 during the 100 days of remembrance.
RIB said this as Rwanda and the world join forces to launch the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, which will begin with a week of mourning that will begin on April 7, 2026 and continue until April 13, 2026, and continue for 100 days of remembrance.
